Rotary is a service organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and and help build goodwill and peace in the  world.

(The Ideal of Rotary)

The original Rotary Club was organized in Chicago, Illinois, by Paul E. Harris.  It first met February 23, 1905.  The name "Rotary" was chosen because the club met in rotation at each member's place of business.  From the beginning, the Rotary idea of friendship, fellowship, and service to others, has spread worldwide to six continents.

Today, Rotary is a service organization of business and professional men and women from around the world, who conduct local and worldwide humanitarian projects, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and work toward world understanding and peace.  There are now more than 1.2 million service-minded men and women belonging to over 29,000 Rotary clubs in more than 160 countries!

The Heart of Rotary:

All humanitarian movements are born to meet a great need.  To be successful, they must have a clear sense of mission and how to accomplish it.  Albert Schweitzer, French Nobel Peace Prize Winner, physician, and Rotarian, said that voluntary movements like Rotary International are essential to human development and dignity.

At the heart of Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders, united worldwide, who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build good will and peace in the world.

Object of Rotary:

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

  • FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
  • SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
  • THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business and community life;
  • FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Through the Four Avenues of Service each Rotarian has many opportunities to serve others through his or her Rotary Club:

  • Club Service
  • Vocational Service
  • Community Service
  • International Service
